The RCQ Judge Compensation Survey

Are you a judge who works RCQs at your local game store? If so, Judge Foundry wants to hear from you!

In this survey, we’re trying to gather information about judge compensation at RCQs, because we’re looking to post some recommendations for tournament organizers. This will help new TOs figure out how to price their RCQs to ensure that they’re able to properly compensate their judges, and help new judges determine what to charge for their time and expertise.

The survey is located here.

It’ll be open for two weeks, and it’ll take about five minutes to fill out (which means you could fill it out 4,032 times, but please just fill it out once). In it, we ask questions about the size and complexity of your typical in-store RCQ, about how you get paid, and about you and your local area. The survey is completely anonymous, though if you want to elaborate on your answers to tell us something we didn’t ask about, you can email the board of directors.

Here are some frequently asked questions:

The SCGCon I worked included an RCQ – should I include that?

For this survey, we’re just looking to learn about in-store RCQs, and analogous Competitive REL events. While destination events are also important to us, they have different cost expectations for judges and we don’t want to lump them together.

I get paid in CAD. Should I convert my comp to USD?

No, thank you! The first section of the survey asks if you’re in the United States or Canada, and we’ll handle all the conversion.

I worked a bunch of RCQs and they all had different compensation. Should I fill out the survey several times?

We would prefer if you just estimate the average case and use that.

I didn’t work any RCQs, but I judge FNMs every week. Do you want information about that?

We do, but not on this survey. We’ll likely conduct another survey down the road about Regular REL in-store events, but let’s see how this survey goes first and we’ll be better able to create the next one.

Why not survey TOs to get these data?

Because we have a lot of ways to reach judges and fewer ways to reach TOs. We know judges, TOs, and players all have useful things to say, and we’re looking at ways to contact them to get their perspectives down the road. But there’s no reason not to get information from judges while we figure out the TO side.

For what will these data be used?

The primary purpose is to publish some guidelines on trends for judge compensation at RCQs. Beyond that, we’re looking to learn more about in-store judging so we can figure out more ways to serve judges who focus on their LGSs.

When does the survey close?

The survey will close around September 24th.
